Crowdfunding has emerged as a popular method for raising capital, whether for kickstarting a new business, launching a product, or supporting a charitable cause. But what are the tax implications of such campaigns? Let’s delve into it.

Understanding Crowdfunding Crowdfunding involves individuals raising funds for a project, business, or charitable cause by soliciting donations, often small amounts, from a large number of people. This is typically done online via platforms like Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and Fundageek.

Taxation of Crowdfunding in Canada Given that crowdfunding is a relatively new phenomenon in Canada, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) hasn’t yet formulated specific tax laws for it. Instead, the CRA evaluates the tax implications of crowdfunding on a case-by-case basis. However, the nature of the crowdfunding model used can provide some clarity on potential tax treatments.

Four Crowdfunding Models and Their Tax Implications:

  • The Lending Model: Here, supporters contribute with the understanding that their funds are essentially interest-bearing loans. Such funds aren’t considered taxable income since they’re loans meant to be repaid. Moreover, the interest on these loans is tax-deductible.

  • The Equity-Based Model: In this model, supporters contribute in anticipation of acquiring a stake or partial ownership in the entity they’re funding. The funds received in this manner aren’t taxable as they’re treated as capital injections into the company.

  • The Reward-Based Model: Supporters contribute with the expectation of receiving a reward, like a discount or promotional item. While the funds received are taxable as business income, the recipient can deduct expenses linked to the crowdfunding campaign. The taxation for donors depends on the reward’s value.

  • The Donation Model: This model is purely altruistic. Supporters donate without expecting anything in return. While there aren’t specific tax laws for this model yet, it’s likely that donors won’t get donation credits since most crowdfunding campaigns aren’t registered charities.
