Business owners frequently ponder which expenses they can deduct. To assist, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers a list of typical business expense categories. However, it’s crucial to understand that not all expenses that fit into these categories are automatically deductible, as there are various pre-conditions and limitations.
The CRA’s list includes expenses such as advertising, allowances on eligible capital property, bad debts, business start-up costs, business taxes, fees, licenses, dues, business-use-of-home expenses, capital cost allowance, delivery, freight, express, fuel costs (excluding motor vehicles), insurance, interest charges, maintenance and repairs, management and administration fees, meals and entertainment, motor vehicle expenses, legal, accounting, and other professional fees, prepaid expenses, office expenses, other expenses, property taxes, rent, salaries, wages, benefits, supplies, telephone, utilities, and travel.
It’s important to note that this list is not exhaustive, and accountants may categorize certain expenses differently. Additionally, the deductibility of an expense depends on more than just its categorization. The primary consideration for deducting any business or property income expense is the concept of “profit,” i.e., the expenses that need to be subtracted from revenues to determine a business’s profit or the income produced by a property.
